Read the Catholic Mass readings for Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the Wednesday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time. Today’s readings remind us that God is our loving shepherd and that His generosity extends to everyone.
First Reading
Ezekiel 34:1–11
The first reading speaks strongly against shepherds who cared only for themselves instead of caring for God’s people. God promises that He Himself will look after His sheep and seek out those who have been scattered and lost.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 23:1–3a, 3b–4, 5, 6
Response: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
Psalm 23 reminds us that God guides, protects, comforts and provides for His people. Even when we walk through difficult times, we do not need to be afraid because the Lord is with us.

Hebrews 4:12
The word of God is living and effective and knows the thoughts and reflections of our hearts.

Matthew 20:1–16
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the workers in the vineyard. Some workers begin early in the day, while others are hired later. At the end of the day, the landowner gives them the same daily wage.
The workers who came first become unhappy because they feel they deserve more. But the landowner reminds them that he has kept his agreement with them.
Jesus uses this parable to teach us that God is generous and that His gifts are not based on human comparison.
Reflection for Today’s Mass Readings for August 19
God does not want us to compare His blessings in our lives with the blessings He gives to others. Sometimes we may wonder why someone who came to God later seems to receive great blessings. But God knows what each person needs.
Instead of becoming jealous when others are blessed, we should learn to rejoice with them and trust God’s plan for our own lives.
Today’s readings also remind us of the importance of caring for others. We are called to be good shepherds in our families, workplaces, communities and churches by helping those who are weak, lost or in need.
Lord, help us to trust Your goodness, care for others and rejoice in the blessings You give to everyone. Amen.
Prayer
Lord, You are my shepherd and I place my trust in You. Help me not to be jealous of the blessings of others. Teach me to be generous, loving and faithful. Guide me through every difficulty and help me to remain close to You. Amen.
