The Psalm gives us another important lesson. God does not measure people by worldly status or wealth. Instead, He sees the humble and lifts them up.

These words remind us of the special role Mary received in God’s plan. She accepted that role with humility and faith.
Gospel — Matthew 23:1–12
In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns His disciples about religious leaders who enjoy receiving honour and recognition.
He tells the people to listen to good teaching but not to copy the hypocrisy of those who fail to practise what they preach.
Jesus then teaches an important lesson about greatness.
He says that the greatest among His followers must become a servant. He also warns against seeking titles, praise and positions simply to make oneself appear important.
Jesus concludes with a powerful message:
“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
Reflection on Today’s Mass Readings for August 22
Today’s readings connect beautifully with the celebration of Mary’s queenship.
At first, the word “Queen” might make us think about power, wealth and status. However, Mary’s life shows us a different kind of greatness.
Mary did not become great by seeking attention.
Instead, she trusted God and accepted His will. She welcomed Jesus into her life and remained faithful to Him.
The Gospel also teaches us that God values humility.
People often want others to notice their achievements. Some may seek important positions because they want recognition. Others become unhappy when someone else receives praise.
Jesus gives us a better way to live.
True greatness comes from serving, not from being served.
Mary gives us a wonderful example of this attitude. She accepted God’s plan without demanding recognition for herself.
Her life teaches us to place God first and allow Him to work through us.
What Does Mary’s Queenship Mean?
The Church calls Mary Queen because of her unique relationship with Jesus Christ, the King.
Her queenship does not mean that Mary is equal to God. Catholics do not worship Mary. Instead, Catholics honour her because God chose her to be the mother of His Son.
Mary’s title also points us toward Jesus.
Since Christ is King, Mary has a special place beside Him as His mother. Her queenship therefore directs our attention to the greatness of her Son.

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for the gift of Your Mother, Mary.
Teach me to follow her example of faith, humility and obedience.
When I receive praise, keep me from becoming proud. When people overlook me, help me remain faithful.
Give me a heart that wants to serve rather than seek attention.
Help me to love You more deeply and to treat everyone around me with kindness and respect.
Mary, Queen of Heaven, pray for us and lead us closer to your Son.
