Today’s Mass Readings for August 27, 2026, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Monica. She is well known for her persistent prayers for her son, Saint Augustine.
The readings for today remind us that God is faithful. They also encourage us to praise Him, remain spiritually awake, and faithfully carry out the work He has given us.
First Reading – 1 Corinthians 1:1–9
In the first reading, Saint Paul writes to the Christians in Corinth. He reminds them that they have been called to belong to Jesus Christ and to live as His holy people.
Paul begins by thanking God for the grace given to the Christians in Corinth. Through Christ, they have received spiritual blessings and have been strengthened in their faith.
More importantly, Paul assures them that God is faithful. The Lord who called them into fellowship with His Son will continue to strengthen them as they follow Him.
Reflection
This reading gives us a beautiful reminder: God does not abandon the people He calls.
At times, we may feel weak in our faith. Perhaps we have struggled with prayer, fallen into sin, or wondered whether we can truly become the person God wants us to be.
Nevertheless, our Christian life does not depend on our strength alone. God gives us His grace so that we can continue moving forward.
Therefore, when you feel discouraged, do not give up. Ask God for the grace to take the next step.
Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 145:2–7
Response: I will praise your name for ever, Lord.
Today’s psalm invites us to praise God every day. His greatness is beyond what we can fully understand, yet His goodness is always worth remembering.
The psalm also reminds us that God’s wonderful works should be passed from one generation to another. Parents can tell their children about God’s goodness, while children can grow up learning to recognize His presence in their lives.
Even ordinary moments can become reasons to give thanks.
For example, we can praise God for the gift of life, our families, food, friends, answered prayers, and the strength to face difficult days. Above all, we can praise Him simply because He is God.

“Stay awake! For you do not know when the Son of Man will come.”
Gospel – Matthew 24:42–51
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples to stay awake and be ready because they do not know when the Son of Man will come.
To explain this, Jesus compares His coming to the arrival of a thief. A homeowner who knew when the thief was coming would certainly stay prepared.
In the same way, Christians are called to remain spiritually prepared.
Jesus then gives another example. He speaks about a servant whose master leaves him in charge of the household. The master expects the servant to continue doing his duty while he is away.
If the master returns and finds the servant faithfully doing his work, that servant will be blessed. However, a servant who becomes careless and begins mistreating others will face the consequences.
What Does This Mean for Us?
Jesus is not asking us to live in fear. Instead, He wants us to live each day with faith and purpose.
Being ready for Jesus does not mean spending every moment wondering when He will return. Rather, it means faithfully living the Christian life today.
For instance, we can prepare our hearts by forgiving someone who has hurt us. We can also help someone who needs our support, tell the truth when it is difficult, and make time for prayer.
Even small acts of love matter.
Consequently, we should not keep saying, “I will pray tomorrow,” or “I will forgive later.” We do not know what tomorrow will bring.
The best time to live faithfully is today.
Saint Monica – A Mother Who Never Gave Up
Today, the Church also remembers Saint Monica, a woman whose life teaches us the power of persistent prayer.
Monica prayed for many years for the conversion of her son, Augustine. Although the answer did not come immediately, she refused to stop trusting God.
Eventually, Augustine returned to the Christian faith and became one of the great saints and teachers of the Church.
Saint Monica’s story can encourage anyone who has been praying for someone they love.
Maybe you are praying for a child who has moved away from God. Perhaps you are asking God to help a family member, friend, or loved one who is going through a difficult time.
Whatever your situation may be, do not lose hope.
Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep bringing your loved ones before God.
Saint Monica reminds us that we may not always see God’s work immediately. Nevertheless, God is never deaf to a sincere prayer.
Lessons from Today’s Mass Readings for August 27
1. God is faithful
God never stops caring for His children. Therefore, even when life becomes difficult, we can continue trusting Him.
2. Praise God every day
Our reasons for praising God are not limited to moments when everything goes perfectly. Even during difficult seasons, His goodness remains.
3. Stay spiritually awake
Jesus calls us to remain prepared. That means keeping our relationship with God alive through prayer, repentance, love, and good works.
4. Faith should be seen in our actions
It is not enough to say that we believe in Jesus. Our faith should also influence the way we treat other people.
5. Never give up praying
Saint Monica’s life shows us the importance of perseverance. When an answer seems delayed, we can continue praying and trusting God’s timing.

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for the gift of another day. Help me to remain faithful to You and keep my heart ready for Your coming.
When I feel weak, give me strength. When I become discouraged, give me hope. Teach me to forgive, love, serve, and do what is right even when nobody is watching.
Like Saint Monica, help me to persevere in prayer. Give me patience when my prayers seem unanswered and help me trust Your plan.
May my words, choices, and actions bring glory to Your name.
