The Magnificat prayer is one of the most beautiful prayers of praise in the Bible. It is the song of the Blessed Virgin Mary after she visited her cousin Elizabeth. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth recognised Mary as the mother of her Lord and called her blessed.
Mary responded with a song of praise that has been prayed and sung by Christians for centuries.
“My soul doth magnify the Lord.”

Mary did not focus on herself. Instead, she praised God for His goodness, mercy and faithfulness.
Mary’s Song of Praise
When Mary heard Elizabeth’s words, she rejoiced in what God had done for her. She recognised that the blessings she had received were not because of her own greatness, but because God had chosen her and shown her favour.

“Rejoice, for God Has Shown Me Favour”
The Magnificat teaches us something important about Mary. She knew that God had favoured her, but she did not allow that favour to make her proud.
Instead, she rejoiced in God.
Mary’s words remind us that whenever God blesses us, we should remember the One who gave us the blessing.
We may have reasons to be proud of our achievements, our family, our work or the opportunities we have received. Yet Mary teaches us to say:

What Can We Learn From the Magnificat?
1. Praise God for His blessings
Mary immediately turned her attention to God. She recognised that everything good in her life came from Him.
We too should learn to thank God for both the big and small blessings in our lives.
2. Remain humble
Mary was chosen for an extraordinary mission, yet she called herself the humble servant of the Lord.
God’s blessings should lead us to gratitude, not pride.
3. Trust God’s mercy
Mary praised God’s mercy because she knew that God does not abandon His people.
When life becomes difficult, the Magnificat reminds us that God’s mercy remains faithful.
4. Remember the poor and humble
Mary speaks about God lifting up the lowly and filling the hungry with good things.
Her song reminds us that God cares deeply for those who are forgotten, struggling and in need.
5. Give God the glory
Perhaps the greatest lesson of the Magnificat is this: give God the glory.
Mary could have focused on the extraordinary privilege she had received. Instead, she pointed everyone towards God.
A Simple Prayer Inspired by the Magnificat
Lord, my soul praises You because You have been good to me.
Thank You for every blessing You have given me, even those I sometimes fail to notice.
Give me the humility of Mary, the faith to trust You and the courage to follow Your will.
When I am blessed, keep me grateful.
When I am suffering, keep me hopeful.
When I am successful, keep me humble.
When I am afraid, remind me of Your mercy.
May my life, like Mary’s song, always give glory to You.
