Memorial of Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe
The Mass readings for Friday, August 14, 2026, invite us to reflect on God’s mercy, faithfulness, and plan for our lives. The day is also the Memorial of Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe, Priest and Martyr, a saint who gave his life in love for another prisoner during his imprisonment at Auschwitz.
First Reading – Ezekiel 16:1-15, 60, 63
The first reading uses the story of Jerusalem to describe God’s relationship with His people.
God reminds Jerusalem of where she came from. She was helpless and abandoned, but God cared for her, protected her, and gave her a beautiful life. However, after receiving God’s blessings, she became proud and turned away from Him.
Yet, even after her unfaithfulness, God remembers His covenant and promises mercy.
This reading reminds us that God does not forget us, even when we turn away from Him.
Sometimes, we may look at our lives and remember our mistakes. We may feel that we have gone too far from God. But this reading shows that God’s mercy is greater than our failures.
God wants us to remember where our blessings came from and remain faithful to Him.
Responsorial Psalm – Isaiah 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6
Response: Your anger turned away and you comforted me.
The psalm is a song of trust and thanksgiving. It reminds us that God is our salvation and that we have no reason to live in fear when we place our trust in Him.
The Lord is our strength. He is our song. He is the source of our salvation.
Therefore, we are encouraged to praise Him and make His goodness known.
Gospel – Matthew 19:3-12
In the Gospel, the Pharisees ask Jesus about divorce.
Jesus takes them back to God’s original plan for marriage. He teaches that a husband and wife become one and that what God has joined together should not be separated.
The disciples are surprised by the seriousness of Jesus’ teaching. Jesus then explains that not everyone is called to marriage. Some people receive a special calling to remain unmarried for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Reflection on Today’s Gospel
Jesus reminds us that God’s plan should always come before human convenience.
Marriage is not simply a contract between two people. It is a sacred union in which a husband and wife are called to love, remain faithful, forgive one another, and grow together.
At the same time, Jesus reminds us that God calls people in different ways. Some are called to marriage, while others are called to a life of celibacy and complete service to God.
Whatever our vocation may be, the important thing is to follow God’s will faithfully.
What Today’s Mass Readings for August 14 Teaches Us
Today’s readings give us three important lessons:
1. Never forget God’s goodness.
Everything we have comes from God. We should not allow blessings to make us forget the One who gave them to us.
2. God’s mercy is greater than our failures.
Even when we fall, God continues to call us back to Him.
3. Be faithful to your calling.
Whether God calls us to marriage, religious life, priesthood, or another form of service, we should seek to follow Him faithfully.
Saint Maximilian Kolbe gives us a beautiful example of this kind of faithfulness. He placed love and sacrifice above his own life.
Prayer for Friday, August 14, 2026
Lord, thank You for Your mercy and faithfulness. Help me never to forget the blessings You have given me. When I fall, give me the grace to return to You. Help me to remain faithful to my vocation and to love others with a generous heart. Through the intercession of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, give me courage to live my faith and make sacrifices for others. Amen.
