The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mass Readings for August 15 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This great Marian feast celebrates Mary’s being taken body and soul into heavenly glory.
First Reading – Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab
The first reading presents a great sign in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet and a crown of twelve stars.
The woman gives birth to a male child, while a great dragon appears as a sign of evil and opposition.
The reading points toward the victory of God and His kingdom. It reminds us that evil does not have the final victory. God remains in control, and salvation belongs to Him.
Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 45:10, 11, 12, 16
Response: On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir.
The psalm presents the image of a queen standing in glory beside the king. On the Solemnity of the Assumption, the Church sees this beautiful image as fitting with Mary’s heavenly glory.
Mary’s life was marked by humility and obedience. Now, the Church celebrates her as the Mother of Christ who shares in His glory.
Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 15:20-27
St. Paul teaches that Christ has been raised from the dead and is the first fruits of those who have died.
Because Christ conquered death, Christians have hope in the resurrection. Mary’s Assumption points toward this same hope.
Therefore, the feast is not only about Mary. It also reminds us of the destiny God has prepared for those who belong to Christ.
Gospel – Luke 1:39-56
The Gospel tells us about Mary’s visit to Elizabeth. When Elizabeth hears Mary’s greeting, the child in her womb leaps for joy.
Elizabeth praises Mary for believing God’s promise. Mary then responds with her beautiful prayer of praise, the Magnificat.
Mary declares that God has done great things for her. She gives all the glory to God and recognizes His mercy toward those who trust in Him.
Reflection on the Assumption of Mary
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary gives Christians a message of hope.
Mary completely trusted God. She accepted His will, became the mother of Jesus, remained faithful through suffering, and now shares in heavenly glory.
Her Assumption reminds us that our earthly life is not the end. God calls His children to eternal life.
Moreover, Mary’s example teaches us to remain humble. She did not boast about the great things God had done for her. Instead, she said:
“My soul magnifies the Lord.”
The Solemnity of the Assumption therefore invites us to trust God more deeply and to look forward to the resurrection.
Prayer for the Feast of the Assumption
Mary, Mother of God, pray for us. Help us to trust God as you did and to remain faithful to Him throughout our lives. Lead us closer to Jesus and teach us to say yes to God’s will. May your Assumption remind us that eternal life is the hope of every faithful Christian. Amen.
