St. Joan of Arc is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church. Known as the Maid of Orléans, she courageously followed God’s call to help save France during the Hundred Years’ War. Although she lived a short life, her unwavering faith, bravery, and obedience continue to inspire Catholics throughout the world.
Early Life
St. Joan of Arc was born around 1412 in Domrémy, France. From an early age, she was devoted to prayer and the Catholic faith. As a teenager, she believed that God called her through the voices of St. Michael the Archangel, St. Catherine of Alexandria, and St. Margaret of Antioch.
Despite having no military training, Joan trusted God’s guidance and accepted the mission entrusted to her. Moreover, Joan remained completely faithful to God’s instructions even when many people doubted her mission.
God’s Mission
Joan convinced the French authorities to allow her to lead soldiers into battle. Under her leadership, the French army achieved a remarkable victory at the Siege of Orléans in 1429. As a result, the victory at Orléans changed the course of the war and restored hope to the French people.
Her courage renewed hope throughout France and helped pave the way for King Charles VII to be crowned.
Trial and Martyrdom
In 1430, Joan was captured by enemy forces. She was handed over for trial on false charges of heresy and was condemned to death. However, Joan never denied her faith or the visions she had received from God.
On 30 May 1431, at only nineteen years old, Joan was burned at the stake. Throughout her suffering, she remained faithful to Jesus Christ and courageously forgave her enemies.
Canonization and Legacy
Years after her death, the Church declared that her trial had been unjust. She was beatified in 1909 and canonized by Pope Benedict XV on 16 May 1920.
Today, St. Joan of Arc is honoured as the Patron Saint of France, soldiers, military personnel, prisoners, and those facing difficult challenges. Her life reminds Christians to trust God completely, remain faithful in adversity, and courageously defend truth and justice. Therefore, Catholics continue to honour her as a model of courage, obedience, and unwavering trust in God’s plan.
