The Virgin Mary is known by many beautiful titles in the Catholic Church. These titles express different aspects of her life, her relationship with Jesus, her role in salvation history, and the love and devotion Christians have for her.
Mary is not a different person each time a different title is used. Rather, these titles help us understand the many ways the Church honours the Mother of Jesus.
Why Does Mary Have So Many Titles?
Many of Mary’s titles come from Scripture, Church tradition, prayers, liturgy and Marian devotions. Others are connected with particular places, events or approved Marian apparitions.
For example, Mary, Mother of God points to her relationship with Jesus. Our Lady of Sorrows recalls her suffering at the Passion of Christ. Queen of Heaven speaks of her exalted place with Christ.
These titles ultimately point us toward the mystery of Christ and God’s work through Mary.
1. Blessed Virgin Mary
Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most common titles used for Mary.
The title recognises Mary’s unique role as the virgin mother of Jesus Christ. In the Gospel of Luke, Elizabeth greets Mary with the words:
“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
Mary herself also says:
“Henceforth all generations will call me blessed.”
These titles of the Virgin Mary reminds Christians of Mary’s faith, humility and obedience to God.
2. Mother of God
Mother of God, or Theotokos, is one of the most important Marian titles in Catholic Christianity.
It does not mean that Mary existed before God or that she gave birth to the divine nature. Rather, it means that the child she bore is Jesus Christ, the Son of God who became man.
The Church formally affirmed this title at the Council of Ephesus in 431.
3. Mother of Jesus
Mary is also simply called the Mother of Jesus.
She gave birth to Jesus, cared for Him during His earthly life and remained faithful to Him throughout His Passion.
Her motherhood is central to her place in the Gospel story.
4. Immaculate Conception
Immaculate Conception refers to the Catholic teaching that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception by God’s grace.
It is important not to confuse the Immaculate Conception with the virginal conception of Jesus.
The Immaculate Conception concerns Mary’s conception. The virginal conception concerns Jesus’ conception in Mary’s womb.
The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was formally defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854.
5. Queen of Heaven
Mary is honoured as Queen of Heaven because of her unique relationship with Christ the King.
The title is connected with the ancient Christian tradition of recognising Mary as the Mother of the King. Catholics also celebrate the Queenship of Mary as a liturgical memorial.
The title points not to Mary replacing Christ, but to the honour she receives because of her relationship with Him.
6. Mother of the Church
Mary is also known as Mother of the Church.
At the foot of the Cross, Jesus entrusted His mother to the beloved disciple. Catholics understand this moment as having a wider spiritual meaning for Christ’s disciples.
Mary’s motherhood therefore extends beyond her relationship with Jesus to her spiritual relationship with His followers.
7. Our Lady of Sorrows
Our Lady of Sorrows recalls Mary’s suffering during the life, Passion and death of Jesus.
She witnessed the rejection, suffering and crucifixion of her Son.
This title invites Christians to remember Mary’s deep compassion and faithful presence even in suffering.
8. Star of the Sea
Star of the Sea, or Stella Maris, is an ancient title for Mary.
The image presents Mary as a guiding star who points Christians toward Christ.
Just as sailors once looked to the stars for direction, Christians have traditionally looked to Mary as an example of faith that leads them closer to Jesus.
9. Help of Christians
Help of Christians is another ancient titles of the Virgin Mary.
It expresses confidence in Mary’s intercession and her maternal care for Christians.
The title is particularly associated with devotion promoted by St. John Bosco and the Salesian tradition.
10. Mother of Mercy
Mary is called Mother of Mercy because of her close relationship with Christ, who is the source of God’s mercy.
The title is especially familiar from the prayer Salve Regina, which begins:
“Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.”
11. Seat of Wisdom
Seat of Wisdom, or Sedes Sapientiae, is a traditional title for Mary.
Jesus Christ is the divine Wisdom, and Mary carried Him in her womb and gave Him birth.
Christian art often portrays Mary seated with the child Jesus to express this mystery.
12. Ark of the Covenant
Mary is sometimes called the Ark of the Covenant because Christian tradition sees parallels between the Ark of the Old Covenant and Mary, who carried Christ.
The Ark carried the signs of God’s covenant. Mary carried Jesus, the Word made flesh.
This Marian interpretation draws connections between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
13. Morning Star
Mary is also called the Morning Star.
The morning star appears before sunrise and announces the coming day. In Marian devotion, the image points toward Mary as one who directs Christians toward Christ, the true Light.
14. Our Lady of Grace
Our Lady of Grace highlights Mary’s unique reception of God’s grace and her response to God’s call.
The Angel Gabriel greeted Mary:
“Hail, full of grace.”
Mary responded with faith and humility:
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”
15. Mediatrix
Mediatrix is a traditional Marian title referring to Mary’s role in cooperating with God’s grace and interceding for Christians.
Catholic teaching is clear that Jesus Christ is the one Mediator between God and humanity. Mary’s intercession depends entirely on Christ and does not compete with His unique role.
16. Our Lady of the Rosary
Mary is called Our Lady of the Rosary because of the Church’s longstanding devotion to the Holy Rosary.
The Rosary invites Christians to meditate on key events in the life of Jesus while asking Mary to pray for them.
The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7.
17. Our Lady of Lourdes
Our Lady of Lourdes refers to the Marian apparitions reported by St. Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, France, in 1858.
The title became closely associated with prayer, conversion and healing.
The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated on February 11.
18. Our Lady of Fatima
Our Lady of Fatima refers to the Marian apparitions reported by three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.
The messages associated with Fatima strongly emphasised prayer, repentance and conversion.
The memorial of Our Lady of Fatima is celebrated on May 13.
19. Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most beloved Marian titles in the Catholic Church.
It is associated with the 1531 events involving St. Juan Diego in Mexico.
The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12.
20. Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is closely associated with the Carmelite tradition.
The title has its roots in devotion to Mary connected with Mount Carmel and the Carmelite order.
Her feast is celebrated on July 16.

Mary, Our Mother and Model of Faith
The many titles of Mary help Catholics reflect on different aspects of her life and mission. She is the Mother of Jesus, Mother of God, Mother of the Church, Queen of Heaven and humble servant of the Lord.
Yet Mary’s greatest purpose is always to lead us to Christ.
Her words at Cana remain a beautiful reminder:
“Do whatever he tells you.”
